How much does the motorcycle license cost?
You have thought about it for a long time, and you have finally decided to pass your motorcycle license. You even imagine yourself already riding at the controls of this beautiful motorcycle that you have already chosen. But a question still running through your head, what budget do you need to count to be able to pass the motorcycle license?
The motorcycle license: what are the different types of licenses?
The motorcycle license is a very important step for anyone wishing to ride a motorcycle legally. However, the cost of this examination can vary depending on several factors. First of all, you should know that the cost of the motorcycle license depends on the type of license you want to obtain. Indeed, there are 3 categories of motorcycle license, ranging from category A1 to category A. Obviously, the higher the category, the higher the cost of the license will also be.
The different types of motorcycle license:
The A1 license: it will allow you to drive a motorcycle with a power of 11 kW maximum with a displacement of 125 cm3 max.
The A2 license: this will give you the right to ride a motorcycle with or without a sidecar, provided that it has a power/weight ratio of less than 0.2 kW/kg, and that its power does not exceed 35 kW.
License A: this is the exam that will give you the right to drive a motorcycle, with or without a sidecar, whose power will be 73.6 kW maximum. This is the type of license that will allow you to have the largest displacements. To pass this exam, you will first have to pass the A2 license, wait 2 years, then ask to perform an A2-A license bridge.
It is very important to find out about the type of license you want to obtain in order to be sure that it corresponds to the type of motorcycle you want to ride. This will save you additional costs that you would have done without.
The cost of the permit: what services are included in the price?
Of course, the cost of the license will also depend on the driving school you choose and the region in which you are going to pass it. Prices can vary from one driving school to another, so it is important to make comparisons before registering and to check which services are included, or not, in the price.
On average, the total cost of the motorcycle license varies depending on the region, the driving school and the number of hours you will need to prepare for the exam. Pricing is generally done by the hour, between 25 and 50 euros, or by a flat rate, between 700 and 1500 euros. It is therefore important to carefully check which elements are included in the formula you choose in order to avoid any additional costs.
List of items that may be included in the total price of the motorcycle license:
- File creation fees
- Training in the ETM highway code + presentation for the exam (compulsory even if you already have your B license)
- An educational learning booklet
- The 20 hours of compulsory driving provided for by law (12 hours of motorbike traffic + 8 hours of plateau)
- Presentation for the motorcycle license exam
If all these services are not included in the formula you have chosen, expect to pay additional costs during your motorcycle license process.
Motorcycle license exam: what equipment is needed?
If you want a really complete estimate of the cost of your motorcycle license, it is important to include in your budget the expenses relating to the equipment that you will have to wear during the hours of practice and the passage of the exam.
Here is the list of the 4 mandatory equipment:
- An “E” or “NF” approved helmet, in good condition and in the right size for you
- Gloves certified “CE”, “NF” or “EPI”, and reinforced at the level of the joints and the palms of the hands
- A long-sleeved jacket suitable for motorcycling
- High shoes or boots
Take the time to familiarize yourself with this equipment so that it does not interfere with your driving during the license tests. The examiner may have to check your equipment on the day, know how to present it and use it.
Again, the costs will vary depending on the brands and equipment you choose, count between 150 and 200 euros for a helmet and between 50 and 100 euros for gloves.
Bonus equipment: the environmental mat
Once you have equipped yourself well, there is one last piece of equipment that can be very useful to you when you are at home, it is the environmental mat. It is now mandatory in the practice of all motor sports, and it could also be of great use to you at home.
An environmental mat is mainly used to protect the floors from direct contamination due to the flow of liquids such as oil, gasoline or coolant. By placing a mat directly under your motorcycle, it will be able to absorb the equivalent of 1.5 L of liquid per square meter. Thus, if a leak is triggered and you store your motorcycle in your garage, the carpet will stop the spread of the liquid and prevent the formation of a puddle which could be a source of slipping. The environmental mat is therefore a piece of equipment that ensures your daily safety.
